Greetings from all of us here at Serenity Now.
I (Brooke) want to thank you for being the greatest extended family I could have ever asked for.
The other day I saw the movie “Overboard” with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. I had seen it many years ago. At the time I thought it was kind of silly and really didn’t think about it again. This time though I saw some spiritual elements in it – I kid you not.
The movie premise, if you have not seen it, is about an heiress that falls off a yacht, bumps her head, and gets amnesia. She forgets everything; including her own identity.
A carpenter that she owed some money to sees this as an opportunity to get even with her and basically tells her a pack of lies. For example, that she is his wife and the mother of his four boys, that were in serious need of discipline. A behavioral therapist would have fainted at the sight of them. The home he brings her to is basically a large outhouse.
Here is where I saw the spiritual elements. First of all, if we have forgotten our identity as the children of the Most High God, then we are susceptible to believe the lies, whatever they may be. A lie can be anything, and it leaves us open for someone with an agenda to try to control or manipulate us.
This one scenario explains what has been called the human condition, or the fall of man. Without the truth and the sure-footedness of our identity as a beloved of the universe, we could fall for anything; just like Goldie’s character did. Of course, once she regained her memory she was free from bondage imposed by self and others.
The Bible says “The truth shall set you free” (John 8:32). At the end, she experienced a life better that she ever imagined. (Ephesians 3:20) “Now to Him who is able to do infinitely more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us”.
After the movie was over I could see that my take on things had changed so much through the years, which I took to mean I had grown in some ways. Plus having a smile on my face for the length of the movie was a fresh and welcome relief from all the uncertainty that seems to be at every turn.
Talking about relief, there is so much going on in the store. We have added several practitioners who have joined the roster. We want to be here for you!
